There are a lot of independent jewelry designers these days, and while all of them create beautiful adornments, a select few are taking the artform to a new level.
One of those artists is Jennifer Morris, whose work I recently stumbled upon while browsing the items at etsy.com (one of my favorite pastimes).
What I like about Jennifer’s work is that she uses the same technique to create elegant pieces as well as whimsical ones. The intricacy and precision of her work is stunning!
The extra-special touch: Jennifer uses many vintage materials such as rhinestones and ribbon in her work, and makes gift pouches from vintage fabric and ribbon as well!

There’s nothing that satisfies me more than buying a crafty book and discovering that it’s just as good as I expected it would be; that it is easy to understand, chock full of clever projects, and inspiring. Such a book is a gem, something to be treasured for an infinite period of time. Take my grandmother’s sewing books, for example- despite their yellowed pages, they still prove to be an invaluable resource. Will the crafty books of today still be valued and loved by the craftsters of the future? Well, let’s see!
Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt by Megan Nicolay is a great book for someone entirely new to the world of reconstructing t-shirts. Meg shows you every technique imaginable to slice, rip, and put together a cool, new look. The only thing about the book is that the techniques are pretty simple, some even involving no-sew alterations- which can be a positive or negative, depending on your experience level. Quite a few are available on the Internet in craft-oriented forums and communities. However, I find inspiration in the simplicity of the projects- inspiration to try a combination of Meg’s projects in order to create something deliciously unique. Meg even does this herself- take a look at the breath-taking t-shirt wedding dress in the last chapter!
Tease: Inspired T-shirt Transformations by Superstars of Art, Craft and Design is another treat. Celebs of the diy community, such as Leah Kramer, webmistress of craftster.org- have all contributed their own patterns and tutorials, all involving the now-infamous t-shirt. I find most of these projects to be incredibly innovative, and suitable for people of all craft backgrounds. It’s also cool that every artist shares their concepts for each project. All in all, it’s a great buy
With the growing acceptance of diy into mainstream culture, new books appear on the market everyday. Do searches on the internet yourself- you’ll find all sorts to suit your particular interest.
